Ideal Landing Sector Material?

Hi folks,

I found this site online when doing some research and was hoping you all could provide some advice. I'm with an
engineering company that has designed track and field facilities for a local
high school here in Gainesville, FL. The material that was used (at the school's
request) for the shot put landing sector is proving to be a bad product. We have
done extensive research but cannot find a definitive answer on what is "best" to
use for the area. Sand seems to not work well due to "splashing" and making
distance markings difficult. Clay seems to work very well when dry, but of
course when it rains you end up with a lake. I'm wondering if a mix of the two
might be ideal?

In addition, what is
the ideal thickness of the material? I've found virtually no information on
this. Our initial inclination is to place 8 inches, but this becomes very costly
due to the volume of material required. The school is a private
Catholic High School, and therefore has very limited funds. So we are looking
for cost-effective material that will provide a desirable
surface.

Dan Sostrom, P.E.

Shot Put League?

I live in the San Antonio Tx area and i was wondering if anyone knew of a "track league" for this area? (Just like softball leagues, basketball leagues, ect.) I think throwing with fellow shot putters and sharing ideas would help with my training. I've even thought of going to the local university and speaking to the track coach but I dont know how that would seem.
