So today during practice my coach said that I need more horizontal velocity because when I long jump I tend to work harder on getting up than going the distance. So I need help learning how to add more horizontal velocity to my long jump. Any idea? Tips? Anything would be great.

Are you trying jump off the board or run off it? If you're trying to get a more powerful take off, you're probably decelerating through the board in preparation for the jump. Height isn't a bad thing in the event, but it isn't paramount. Concentrate more on keeping the last two steps quick off the board. Get to the board quick and stay quick off it. Trying to do too much in the event will slow things down. Case in point look at Marion Jones, her form was horrendous, but she was so fast at the board it didn't matter.

Your coach is just telling you to run faster down the runway. You should be at maximum controlled speed before you take your penultimate step. You will slow down a little because of your hips dropping rigt before the jump but its a give and take. Workout with the sprinters every so often and just continue practicing your approach. The momentum from your approach will carry over into your flight and will help you get distance on your jump.
